When to bring your pet in right away

The signs that cannot wait until morning, and what to do on the way.

Some problems get worse by the hour. If you see any of the signs below, come in straight away and call on the way so the team is ready. Banilad Hospital is open 24 hours.

Come in now if your pet

  • is struggling to breathe, breathing with an open mouth (cats) or has blue or very pale gums
  • collapses, cannot stand, or has a seizure
  • is bleeding heavily or has been hit by a vehicle, even if it seems fine afterwards
  • has a swollen, hard belly and keeps trying to vomit without bringing anything up
  • strains to pee and nothing comes out, especially male cats
  • may have eaten something toxic: rat poison, chocolate, grapes or raisins, onions, human medicines or chemicals
  • is panting hard, drooling and weak after time in the heat
  • has been in labour for a long time without a puppy or kitten arriving

On the way

  • Keep your pet calm, quiet and warm, and carry small pets in a box or carrier.
  • Bring the packet, plant or bottle if you think your pet ate something. A photo of the label helps too.
  • Do not give human medicines, and do not make your pet vomit unless a vet tells you to.

Not sure?

Call us. Describe what you see and we will tell you whether to come in now or book a visit. When in doubt, it is always safer to be seen.
